As a television BTS photographer I was commissioned to deliver stills photography on an MQA commercial shot in London. As time was tight most of the content was shot behind the scenes and during the making of the TV commercial.
I spent my weekend on back to back television commercials photographing some publicity stills for both Guide Dog’s first television advert campaign and Ideal Boilers.
I work closely with a production company that offers clients and advertising agencies both BTS stills photography and BTS video production services. Sometimes I can get confirmation on a shoot actually going ahead the day before the production starts. Ideally we would get the client to sign off on a photography brief which enables the photographer to plan a schedule of must get shots for the shoot. As filming can be very costly and time is of the essence. So it is paramount the stills photographer gets key campaign images during and around the main filming.
Luckily the agency who books the photographer is on set and able to support the photographer in getting time with the talent. They can also guide the photographer in which set ups are more important over others.
For the actual shoot, I spent Thursday and Friday running around a football pitch capturing the talent in various action sequences playing football. They say working with both animals and children on film sets can be challenging but this lot were incredible! Lots of energy, no rain and a fun camera crew! What else could a photographer want!
I was then booked in to photograph the BTS publicity stills campaign for Ideal Boilers television commercial which was filming in Manchester on the Saturday and Sunday. A quick 4 hour journey up the M40 and M6 I was booked into a hotel, putting all the equipment on charge and formatting my memory cards ready for the weekend photography.
I can’t say much at this stage, but we had a fun weekend hanging out with a boy band who were on set to promote the boiler brand.

Here's the thing. Working as a behind the scenes (BTS) photographer is a niche skill and one that takes years to perfect. Anyone with a camera can take a photo. You can take a snap on your iPhone for social media. Scary as that sounds, you can. But lets get real here. You need to achieve a level of sophistication for your brand/client and you need to exceed expectations with content. Let me highlight 5 key factors you need to consider when looking for a behind the scenes photographer:
1. Set Etiquette - booking in time for on set portraits and set ups for stills photography
Understanding set etiquette comes with experience. You have to learn the formal hierarchy of a film and TV set. There is a schedule for the day known as a callsheet where all the information on crew names, contacts to list of scenes is all there. The main person you need to make friends with is the 1st Assistant Director. Then you'll need to be friendly with the camera team, sound team and the grip. These are the people who you stand next too and have to negotiate securing your space to get 'the shot' you need! As ideally the stills photographer will shoot what the main camera is shooting during the take, recreating similar angles and capturing portraits. But often on television commercials there are several cameras operating at once and different types of rigs, like a crane and tracking shots. These are all bits of equipment that can sweep your head off clean or trip you over. And if you don't know what you are doing then it's easy for the photographer to get in the way and slow the production down. Not good!
2.Ninja abilities and stealth mode
This is such a huge factor that separates stills photographers. Not so much on a tv commercial, but can you imagine filming a deep and emotional scene with actors and your stills photographer, gets in their eye line or disturbs them in some way making noise? This would be immediate dismissal! For tv commercials or filming an online ad or social media spot, you may have the talent who are new to the industry? They maybe nervous? They may get distracted easily. You could be working with kids. And it is our job as the camera team to put them at ease whilst doing the job. Being a female photographer, I like to think I have that sixth sense where you feel the room. You know how close you can get to the talent because you are aware of the situation. Possibly their mood? Those are qualities that a photographer can't learn online, they have to experience it first hand and grow from there.
3. Knowing when to speak up and get the shot
Saying all of the above, there are no excuses for not getting the shot! That is why you are there and why they have hired a BTS stills photographer! So it is the photographer's responsibility to not only stay out of the way but to get the images that they need to sell the product, use as point of sale in shops or document the celebrity on set for those social media posts. An experienced behind the scenes photographer will know how to negotiate and book in time for a 5 minute photoshoot with the talent. Time is precious and preparation is key! I often set up a mini studio on the side of set and when I have a 5 minute window with the talent, we jump in and do the shoot and it's all over very quickly. But I may have waited 10 hours for that 5 minute slot! But I've learnt the art of negotiation and asking! But the trick is asking at the right time. As if production is behind and there's still alot to shoot in the day, you don't want to hog the time on set for stills! Unless the main movie camera is down, or we are waiting for something on set, then this could be a window where the stills photographer seizes the moment and grabs that portrait, that set up shot!
4.Specialist equipment - owning a sound blimp or mirrorless camera
I own two aquatech sound blimps for my canon 5d mark iii camera bodies and have also added a mirrorless camera to my set up. You're asking so what? Again if you hire an experienced unit stills photographer you gain access to their specialist on set equipment. Using a sound blimp means you are quiet on set and don't make a sound. So the noise of the shutter is muffled and the sound guy is happy! This is also brilliant for a closed set, or quiet set where discretion and being quiet is imperative to the shoot. As a noisy, clicking camera can be annoying and put off the talent.
5. Experience of working long hours and around everyone else schedule
I think the main point here is yes the hours are long and yes there are alot of crew doing important jobs. Some commercial photographers think the shoot should be about them and their ego! And their set, their time, their set of demands. This is ok if the commercial was just a stills photoshoot. But often, hiring a stills photographer is secondary to the main film shoot. The bts photographer is sometimes an added bonus, capturing images that is added content to the social media campaign. So really the stills photographer needs to understand they are there to blend in and not slow down the main production. Working around the schedule, identifying windows of opportunity and using the time to make quick friendships and build trust. As with trust, you get the photographs that camouflage the caos that surround the talent, and create imagery that stands out!
Ok, so I do have a soft spot for Keanu Reeves with my favourite popcorn movies of the 90's include Point Break and Speed. That aside, let me highlight a beautiful partnership between a celebrity and a brand which caught my eye this week. Keanu Reeves has teamed up with Squarespace on the back of his prior involvement with the brand on the genuine launch of his personal website. Here's a clip of the television commercial which launched during the Super Bowl 2018, which is an expensive slot by American advertising standards!
Let me focus on the following:
1. Genuine partnership and relationship that creates an authentic story
What could be more powerful than a genuine story between a celebrity and a brand? It's just pure genius. And the partnership is so real and evokes all that a marketer could ever want! I love it. Story and authenticity are super important in todays educated and information rich society. And it's a nice story. Keanu actually uses Squarespace! Plus his blockbuster, action packed, cool dude personality adds a huge pulling power when it comes to the Squarespace target audience. Keanu Reeves has been a loved movie star over many decades and people will connect with his endorsement of the Squarespace platform.
2. Behind the scenes content and making of the commercial
Um. If you don't make a behind the scenes video for use on social media then you are in the wrong decade. This is 2018. Content is king! And GREAT content people share! Spreading your brand and message, capitalising on what was already an expensive shoot. See, the thing with filmmaking and creating television commercials is there is always downtime! I've worked as a stills photographer on set for many tv shows and increasingly as a commercials stills photographer, and there is always set up time. The main unit may need to turnaround and set up the set for a different angle which all takes time. The talent is then offered the opportunity to hang around or go back to their trailer. But for the behind the scenes crew, this means potential! Potential to grab a portrait or to do an interview. Of course there is set etiquette and ways of booking this time!
The first port of call is booking a slot with the assistant directors on set who can allocate time for an EPK shoot. Where the talent is booked in for say 10minutes, the EPK team will have previously set up an area for the interview and voila. More content for you to use online. It is mainly down to the organisational skills and know how of the behind the scenes crew that can capitalise on moments which make or break your content!
3. Stills Photography Campaign and multi media use on Instagram
The stills photography campaign is stunning. The photographer is Marcus Eriksson, please check out his work and the additional stills here. I think out of all the media I saw the instagram feed, the above moving image hits an important note. And the future of photography lies with blending technology across all marketing outlets. And effectively. Engaging the viewer whilst staying on brand and on message with the entire campaign. I will certainly be taking note and implement the moving image in my work. Watch this space!
4. Call To Action and Teaser Ads
Before I sign off. Squarespace or the creatives behind the campaign have delivered a series of commercials encouraging call to action. These spots are a perfect way of continuing a campaign and reminder of the most important aspect, for users to sign up. The teaser spot also fits in nicely with the stills photography campaign providing pure synergy across all platforms.
